September 8/2001 - My friend Kevin is getting ready to take some pictures as I strap myself in for my first run ever in Solo II. Kevin should have stuck to taking pictures as we will soon find out.
September 8/2001 - Here is a part I fabricated to try and quicken the steering for autocrossing. It is a piece of 1 3/4" square 1/8" wall box. It moved the pickup point 35% closer to the center of the spindle.
September 8/2001 - Now from the top. This modification made the steering feel a lot faster and helped on the Solo II course, however there is a downside. The pivot point is now too high and a bit too outboard and thus caused some bump steer. This is not noticable at low speed slaloming, but driving on the hiway is a bit hairy. I think I will have to save my pennies and get a new rack one day.
September 8/2001 - Here I am at the Mosport skid pad coming up to the line for my first run. First run = first DNF, I shorted the course. Time to slow down and finish.
September 8/2001 - Here is my friend Terry about to start his first run. The car was pretty awesome that day. I have not done any jetting with the 48IDA weber as of yet and it stumbles a bit between 2 and 3 grand. Qucik fix - stay above 3 grand! I've had it up to 8 grand, but with only 500 miles on the motor I am still taking it easy. Man this car is really quick! After the first couple of runs each, we turned up the rebound and compression on the shocks and we each knocked a second off our times.
September 8/2001 - Kevin coming out of the mid point hairpin. I think this may have been one of Kev's better runs. In fact my car had the fastest run that day, sadly I wasn't driving, Kevin was. I have to remember not to take him next time.
September 8/2001 - I reloacted my front turn signals, because they would sometimes rub the inside of the front tires on severe corners. Since autocrossing is all severe corners I needed to do something. During static testing in the garage the new mounts worked great.
September 8/2001 - But on the race course, with weight shift and dynamic loading there was still interference and the mount and light took quite a beating. I am now on the outlook for some new lamps that I am going to mount on the nosecone.
September 8/2001 - Another war wound. 3 of the 4 fenders cracked due to contact with pylons. I will be doing some fiberglass work over the winter to try to strengthen things up.The car was really in it's element on the race course, however it is a bit too big for Solo II. It is just too darn wide, at 4" over the stock build and with almost 4" extra width for the two rear fenders, that's about 8" wider than a locost and over 10" wider than a real seven. I am going to a lapping day at Mosport in a month on the DDT, looking forward to that as I really want to get into Solo I next year where the car should be more suited to a larger, faster track.
